1996 sparked something of a “Resurgence” in the disaster genre. The arrival of Twister closely followed by director Roland Emmerich’s mega-hit Independence Day (that years highest grossing film) engaged audiences with their impressive visual effects.
Had this by-the-numbers sequel riddled with every cliché in the book, been released two years after the original movie, those involved might have gotten away with it.
Twenty years and a more discerning audience later, what little plot there is revolves around Earth using recovered alien technology in a defence program to protect the planet. When an alien mothership twice the size of the last one arrives, mankind must once again band together or face extinction.
As blockbusters go, there are some competently staged CGI action sequences here, however mostly they offer up more regurgitation. ID2 would have been better served up for the November holidays, such is the nature of this turkey.
